![]() ![]() The TCM is a computer that controls various functions in your vehicle, including the speed of your engine, shifting gears and other automatic transmissions. The shift solenoid is a mechanical switch that is switched on and off by the transmission control module. Solenoid energizing ground is switched through the on/off action of the shift solenoid. The TCM uses various sensors to detect when you shift gears and then sends signals to open or close contacts inside each shift solenoid based on what gear you want to engage. When you press your car’s brake pedal, this action turns on your car’s electronics, including its transmission control module (TCM), which is part of your powertrain control module (PCM). This completes a circuit between the TCM output and the solenoid control circuits. The plunger moves up and down through an opening in the center of the cylinder when it receives power from various components. The shift solenoid is a small cylinder that contains a plunger. When both solenoids are energized, they allow a technician to manually select any gear ratio within their range of operation. This grounds the transmission control module (TCM) through its own relay coil, allowing it to actuate the shift forks. When energized, the coils in both solenoids close an internal ground switch. ![]() The PCM sends a signal to energize or de-energize the shift solenoid coils, which in turn open or close an internal ground switch. The shift solenoid is an electromechanical device that is controlled by the PCM. The SS-A and SS-B can be found on the same valve body side by side. When energized, the coils in both solenoids close an internal ground switch, completing a circuit between the TCM output and the solenoid control circuits. The shift solenoid type A (SS-A) and shift solenoid type B (SS-B) are normally open at rest. Shift solenoid type A (SS-A) and shift solenoid type B (SS-B) are normally open at rest. ![]()
